The last of the North Pennine Snow patches melted yesterday on Mickle Fell. Nothing has been visible on Crossfell for a few days now apart from a brief covering from passing showers. Overall the season has been fairly poor compared with recent years when certain patches lasted from December through to June. I can safely report that glaciation of the High Pennines is unlikley this year !
Thanks to Dave, Brian and Mark for their updates this year. Paul Crabtree Brampton, NE Cumbria www.bramptonweather.co.uk |

Pennines is unlikley this year ! Normally at this time of year, I watch the last two snow patches on the tops of the mountains above Loch Glascarnoch. Not until they melt (usually in the last few days of May) do the nights become warmer. This year the snow levels have been dropping nightly and we have permanent snow down to 300m. It was still snowing at this level (93m AMSL) when I left to do the weeks shopping in Dingwall at 10.30 BST this morning. Still to give the lawn its first cut, trees starting to show green, daffodils starting to go over and the first primroses showing. Any summer now unlikely this year. More "brief covering from passing showers" this morning on Cross Fell top 100 or so feet very white. It's very overcast and cool 5C with a F4 F4 NNE'ly so this may remain for more than a few hours. GDF has just got above 0C in the last couple of hours. Overall the season has been fairly poor compared with recent years ... Almost a "no snow winter", the only memorable amount was mid December or there abouts when we got 6" or so that hung about for a few days. -- Cheers Dave. Nr Garrigill, Cumbria. 421m ASL. |
