Northampton Carnival - wind making trees unsafe; ground too soft in park for
heavy vehicles. Cambridgeshire County Show - ground too soft for heavy vehicles. Cancellation actually requested by the National Trust, who own the ground, and are fearful of lasting damage from vehicles. Suffolk County Show - cancelled just 15 minutes after opening the gates this morning, as the ground was unsuitable for vehicles. Bedford White Water Canoeing - too much water!!! And it goes on. Just to remind everyone, this area is still subject to a Drought Order, and the use of hosepipes by householders is still banned. Flaming Bloody June. The only flames around here are on the burners of my central heating boiler every evening. jim, Northampton |

ROFL This season is turning out to be almost as good as winter with all the drama, brilliant! :-) Bring on the thunderstorms. http://www.lyneside.demon.co.uk/Hayt...antage_Pro.htm Will Hand (Haytor, Devon, 1017 feet asl) --------------------------------------------- |

Right, and for those people who claim that such conditions are perfectly normal for June and are just part of a disturbed British summer, think again. This isn't unprecedended or even exceptional, but it certainly is unusual. You don't get flooding like that in most British summer months. -- Col Bolton, Lancashire 160m asl |

Col in my published extreme rainfall study I noted that most of the severest rainstorms of the past 100 years occurred in summer. Lynmouth flood disaster - August 1952 Martinstown record rainfall - July 1955 Torquay flooding - August 1948 Hampstead storm - August 1975 Wokingham storm - August 1959 I could go on ...... Rainstorms in summer have the potential to be very severe due to convection and higher precipitable water content. Cheers, Will -- |

Cheers, Will How many of those examples were caused by severe thunderstorms or MCS, as opposed to large scale frontal rain with orographic enhancement due to a synoptic scale weather system, like we have at the moment? It is not just the intensity of the rainfall that matters, it is over how large an area it falls and how many people are affected. |
