On warm June days, there is often an expression of surprise
when I say that our average max temp in June is 'only' 19C but it's days like today that demonstrate why. With the air temperature stuck below 11C this morning, we have yet to attain our mean max for November! A nice hot minestrone soup for lunch is in order. Also mirroring November is the all pervading gloom and persistent rain, although far away to the southwest, some brightness has teased us for much of the morning. The rain was slight until 0915Z when it increased to moderate and edged into the heavy zone around 1000Z and 1130Z. There's not too much stratus disguising the very obvious rain bearing nimbostratus. We're certainly piling on the millimeters as the rain will not let up.
Not only have we raced past our average rainfall for the whole of June but I can also announce that the first six months of 2012 will be wetter than average in Romsey, having recently exceeded that marker as well. Which may not sound that bad given that the end of June is only 19 days away, but when you consider how dry Jan-March were, and that May was, at a guess, about average, it shows how extraordinarily wet April and June (so far) have been. I've yet to check my records but this must rank amongst one
of the coolest June days on record with a max temp on a par with a typical November day. Of course, my recording 'day' is 24 hours ending at 0900Z, so there's scope for the temp to rise by 0900Z tomorrow. The rain keeps on falling, measuring almost one inch of rain since 0900Z and it's turned heavy again in the last 5 minutes. I shall have a scout around this evening at the effects of the rainfall on our patch. There were large ponds in the park and the brook that runs beside it was in full spate, threatening to overspill its banks. The most awkward walking was trying to pass under the sagging branches that have suffered from the wet and recent strong winds. Nigel |

The heaviest rain of the day fell between 1750Z and 1850Z
dropping another 6mm. Since then, the intensity has been easing with a rain and drizzle mix. There's no serious flooding in the area, although the local stream was a raging torrent and brimful when I looked at around 1900Z. Answer: it's not night time, that's it. |
