Madrid just failed to reach 40C, but still a new record for June.
Records were also set across a large part of central Spain as this week's heatwave
reached its peak.
Temperatures over 40C were recorded widely in SW Spain.
Hottest place was Cordoba with 44C (but not a record there).

As the figures show, the coasts were escaping the worst of the heat, but this has
changed today (28th) with temperatures around 35C in the Alicante region.

In fact, Alicante airport (El Altet) has set a record June temperature of 37.7C.
In the city itself, 38.8C was recorded.
