I know they said it was going to be slow moving but the cold front has
barely budged in the past couple of hours. I was expecting rain by now,
but it looks to still be several hours away.

Hopefully it will be delayed enough to wash out the trick or treaters
this evening.

Seems to be moving quite steadily according to the radar
(http://www.raintoday.co.uk/), say about 20mph at your latitude?

I think this front will have to get quite twisted to satisfy both of
us. ;-) Mind you, we've already had some rain this morning.

It's moving through Southern Ireland for sure, but the rain just doesn't
seem to be getting appreciably nearer to me.
The patch of rain over Cumbria certainly doesn't seem to have shifted
for several hours.

It looks like the main problem for you is the rain shadow area caused by
the Welsh mountains. Also, there could be a hint of a wave near the IOM
which has slowed things a little.

Hi, Col,
The weather warning for heavy rain issued yesterday for Cumbria was worded
in such a way that I thought it might stick there for some time.

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/..._warnings.html

Usual rain-shadow effect here, just 0.6mm in the past 24 hours, I expect
much more in Upper Teesdale.

The Welsh mountain rain shadow usually affects Cheshire, the Liverpool
Bay area and southern parts of Gtr Manchester. It is unusual for it to
affect my area.
Cold front waves are, of course, a forecasters nightmare

It's been quite bright here for the last hour or so, sun breaking through
the clouds from time to time.

I did look and found it was indeed gone!
I *do* believe you though
