It's a long while since I've placed an observation on here, so to
make up for lost time, I shall post a few today. A cloudy start with outbreaks of slight rain, dying out by 0845Z. Since then it's been increasingly sunny but increasingly windy, the highest gusts of 36kt occurring at both 1047Z and 1135Z. Workmen are laying long sections of gas pipes in our road but already, half a dozen of their barricades have blown over like skittles. It will be interesting to see how many are left standing at the end of the day, assuming they're not righted. The lower Sc layer has evolved into turbulent Cu. Small amounts of Ac and Ci are visible above. The clouds filled in after 1300Z except for a slither of blue on the
southeastern horizon that lasted for another hour. It felt very mild in the earlier sunshine despite the wind and no rain has fallen since 0900Z. After a slight reduction, the wind has regained strength, frequently reaching a steady force 6 in the past half hour and culminating in a spike of 40kt at 1428Z. A nicely timed pass from an aircraft flirting with the base of the Cu has made estimation of cloud heights easier than normal. My afternoon entertainment of watching the gasworks barricades
blowing over was spoilt somewhat by a foreman displaying some intelligence, draping sandbags meant for flood prevention of the trench across the foot of each barricade to stabilise it. All very well until it rains! There's no rain yet to report but the wind is still audible, with a peak gust so far of 43kt at 1608Z which is certainly nothing out of the ordinary for November. Rain in the air was first noticed at 2015Z and it has just become
moderate on this ob with the beginnings of a pressure kick. The onset of the rain coincided with a further increase in the wind to force 7 and wild sounding gusts of 47kt at 2018Z. There could well be some tree debris evident in the morning. I wasn't going to produce another ob but the amount of rain that
has fallen in the past hour is worthy of one, especially since only 0.1mm had fallen up to 2100Z today. Heavy rain commenced at 2055Z and if anything, pepped up to max intensity about half an hour later, bringing more than half an inch of water into the gauge inside one hour. The wind swung sharply round to WSW with a marked decrease in speed.
