Tideswell, Derbyshire - Friday 14th December 2012
----------------------------------------------------- 0630z E F3 0200 -FZRADZ FZFG 8St001 -00.4/-00.4 991 RMK: I would describe conditions as extreme this morning. There's a glaze of ice on all surfaces, probably with the exception of salted roads and pavements. I took a couple of steps out of our back door and decided that it wasn't very clever at all. It's exceptionally slippery. I think there might be a few broken bones this morning. It should only be a short-lived problem, though, as the temp is rising steadily and looks like it'll soon be above zero. -- Norman Lynagh Tideswell, Derbyshire 303m a.s.l. |

Don't you have grit boxes in Tideswell? Don't know where they originated but I remember seeing them advertised in newspapers when I was a child - about sixty years ago. After not seeing the adverts for a decade or so, I've noticed them again in the last few years. The original ones looked a bit like flat springs stretched across the sole of the shoe but now you can also get the ones I believe Will is thinking of, those with what look a bit like cricket studs. The last time I fell over, they wouldn't have helped as 99.99% of the pavements were ice free; I just didn't notice the A4-sized patch of ice amongst some leaves. -- Graham P Davis, Bracknell, Berks. Very icy - I heard of several pedestrian and road accidents this morning. Worst so far is an elderly lady who broke her leg slipping on the pavement. Not good and most will be pleased to see milder conditions back for a day or two. Ken Copley, Teesdale. |

There's still some ice on hard surfaces but most of it has now gone. Proper rain started just before 1000z and turned to moderate sleet around 1030z. This continued till about 1330z when it reverted to moderate rain as the temp crept above 3 deg. It was foggy for most of the morning then more intermittently in the afternoon. Max temp so far is 4.1 but it's still going up slowly. There's been close on 15 mm of rain since 0900z. -- Norman Lynagh Tideswell, Derbyshire 303m a.s.l. |
