Well, that's the approx snowfall equivalent of the 26.5mm of rain we had overnight, together with the strong/gale winds.
The wind strength graph at http://www.landsendweather.info/ shows dramatically the clearance of the main front. 1987 - when there was 30cm of snow just a few hundred yards inland. http://www.turnstone-cottage.co.uk/1987Snow.pdf That was a proper easterly.
