Default [OBS] Romsey - Friday 18th January 2013

During the period 0600-0745Z, smallish snowflakes were falling
in the slight to moderate range. Since then, the snowflakes have
dramatically grown and dropping at a good moderate rate, with
a short heavy spell between 0810Z and 0825Z, reducing the
horizontal visibility to 400m, and it's simply impossible to be
able to provide a cloud base.

In the past hour, the level snow depth has doubled from 3cm to
6cm. The snow is very sticky because it's clinging to all surfaces
despite the force 4 wind. There's just the occasional puff when a
gust is strong enough to push the snow off a branch.

Default [OBS] Romsey - Friday 18th January 2013

This report will be sent a tad late because I've just returned from
a 5 mile hike / snowball fight with my two daughters who are off
school / college.

The snow eased for a while before reintensifying around 1030Z
and the visibility has dropped back into fog limits. With the air
temp down to -0.4C, the character of the snow has changed to
become more powdery and it's beginning to drift here. The
earlier compact snow remains mostly affixed to trees and
power lines in the area.

On Baddesley Common, 2 miles east of Romsey, level snow
is 11cm deep with minor drifts to 25cm.

Default [OBS] Romsey - Friday 18th January 2013

The moderate intensity snow has been falling in short bursts since
midday and most of the flakes are quite small, not adding much to
the overall depth. Drifting appears to have ceased, at least for the
time being.

Currently, we have a complete cover of dry snow atop a deeper
layer of compact snow, averaging 11cm with small drifts to 20cm.
In the local area, a few drifts are approaching 30cm. After this
report, it will be back outside to resume snowman construction.

Default [OBS] Romsey - Friday 18th January 2013

It's not often that it snows from dawn to dusk in Romsey but
that was achieved today, building an uneven 100% covering
of 12cm, the deepest snow measured here since the 13cm on
2nd December 2010. This could yet be beaten because the
snow is still falling, albeit slight. Lots of photographs taken
but only with my 35mm film camera as the batteries in the
digital one objected to the cold. What a pretty scene today!

Default [OBS] Romsey - Friday 18th January 2013

Slight snow has continued through the evening, only recently
turning intermittent. Average level snow depth is held at 12cm,
parity maintained thanks to any new accumulation being offset
by almost imperceptible melting and possible compaction of
existing snow cover. A three inch long icicle dangling from the
neighbour's guttering is releasing a drip every now and again.
