In a bit of a quandary travelling tomorrow. We have a Sunday lunch
and 'Les Mis' film appointment tomorrow in South Derbyshire. We live in
SE Sheffield and should be driving back north at around 19:30.

Currently the forecast for SE Sheffield at 15:00 and 18:00 Sunday is
heavy snow, but then heavy snow was forecast for 9:00 this morning at
3:00 and by 6:00 the forecast was amended to light snow - which has duly
arrived.

Don't know whether it's my age making me a bit 'Chicken Licken', or
whether I'm being sensible by considering cancelling. It's probably due
to the fact that I rarely travel as I work from home.

I'm just seeking assurance on whether the forecast snow tomorrow is
likely to arrive as described, or if there is a high probability of the
snow being lighter/different than currently forecast.

No replies will probably indicate the latter.

Thanks for reading.

Just watched this video that gives an 80% certainty of moderate snow
over my area... would you agree with this video?

Hi Wendy

The system moving up from France will have an easterly element in it unlike yesterdays snow event. These situations seem to bring much more snow to our area as some lift is provided as the air starts to push over higher ground on its approach to the peaks. In December 2010 Sheffield had snow as deep or deeper that many places in the peaks. However, the situation is all about timing and if the precipitation does become light there must be a chance of it turning a little sleety or drizzly for a time at least?

One thing that is worth investing in though if snow driving worries you is winter tyres they really make a difference.

Regards

Simon S (South Yorkshire)
