Walk you walked?
The snow was so bad at times when I was a lad we had to crawl on our knees
through t'snow as the wind was so strong you couldn't stand up. And that
was after a breakfast of lard and coal :-)

I should have said tried to walk

1 inch of snow here in East Yorkshire and the schools are closed. I
went 7 years in the 60's without a closure once. Hey I'm sounding
like an old fart - yeah!

I know what you mean Trevor, I walked to school in some bad blizzards
in the 60s but today they only have to see a snowflake

Yeah OK, so we were upper working class - we had a house as well.
Probably looked down on you, like I do today :-)

No you're not! I recall not missing one day's school in the winter of
62-63 in South Lincolnshire.

No, I don't think we did either.

I know the Secondary Modern kids did miss a day, but that was only because their school bus slid off the road and ended up in a ditch, but apart from one broken leg I think there were no serious casualties.

I agree. As kids we used to have a great time making the playground a slippy
as possible with slides...

Same here, and that was only about 30 years ago.

Of course these days nonbody walks further than their front door to the car.
There are kids driven to school from homes less than 400yds away from the
school...

The reason often given being it is too dangerous to walk/cycle due to
all the cars. Their answer to this is to compound the problem by using
their cars to transport their children. In other words, it is perfectly
acceptable to externalise the dangers onto others.
