1 inch of snow here in East Yorkshire and the schools are closed. I
went 7 years in the 60's without a closure once. Hey I'm sounding
like an old fart - yeah!

I know what you mean Trevor, I walked to school in some bad blizzards
in the 60s but today they only have to see a snowflake

Walk you walked?
The snow was so bad at times when I was a lad we had to crawl on our
knees through t'snow as the wind was so strong you couldn't stand up.
And that was after a breakfast of lard and coal :-)

You had lard AND coal, we just had coal (lard was a luxury!)

Yeah OK, so we were upper working class - we had a house as well.
Probably looked down on you, like I do today :-)

The advantages of being high up!
Why is everyone going on about snow, we had some on Friday, gone by
Saturday and it's been green Devon ever since (well, down this way
anyway!). Are we going to get any tomorrow? Not much according to the
site forecasts for Kirton and Exeter.

So do I, but I can't help wondering how many children spend the day
totally unsupervised when their school is closed, because their parents
can't afford to take a day off work. I bet that it's a lot, and that
some of them are quite young.

Much the same here on Holy Island. Whilst the rest of Northumberland
seems to have ground to a halt, we just get on with life despite strong
winds and sleet. I must admit to feeling a bit jealous though when I
see all the snow on the hills on the mainland and, when visibility
permits, The Cheviots!
