When this cold spell leaves us on Saturday that will be about two weeks
since it began. Without ploughing through the records it seems to me that
many of our similar spells in the past have lasted a for a similar period..
Last years one was about 13 days, never to return and this lot could well do
the same .
Before anyone shoots me down I know December 2010 didn't comply ,but that
was one of our coldest on record ,I'm talking normal winters.
This should get 'em going.....

---------------------------------
A large area seems to have had snowfall of 10 cms or more this spell but
few have had vey cold weather, especially at night. Notably lacking has
been lack of strong winds so no blizzards and very few blue skies.
Otherwise bog standard really.

No blizzards, but we have some drifts at altitude. Also Norman in Tideswell
had drifting.
Of course my falls haven't stopped yet, ....... :-)
Also Ron, the thaw will not be a quick affair, one trough disruption,
another deep low with coolish polar air behind and then what looks like a
build of pressure from the south, so frost at night if clear.
The SW'ly "blowtorch" with heavy rain and flooding now looks more unlikely,
just ordinary rain which will be good for flood-prone areas.

The first winter that I remember well was 1941 when I had just started
school
and was taken to school on a sledge. This was rapidly followed by 1947 which
is well documented. Spent 1962/63 on Dartmoor (some of you may have heard
of it) and now Ron, you are asking us to believe in a God-like creature who
pre-determines that cold spells are only 14 days long and will apply the
cut-off point this weekend. It may interest you to know that up here, we
have
no snow and no unusually cold weather. Your weather is of as much interest
to us as the weather on Muckle Flodda is to you (:-))

Hi, Ron,
Didn't Manley say that the average length of a snow cover was about a week
in lowland England? Can't find it now, of course.

Dave,
There have been some reasonably cold temperatures in this spell. Down
below -12C, grass -18C and daytime -4C in these parts. Chipstead Valley down
to 16C a couple of nights ago. Usual drifting snowfalls at height here with
A68 and A66 closed at times, plus numerous minor roads. Blowing snow here
has been worse that 2010 when there was little drifting and I'm reporting
code 19 to MetO "snow covering ground completely, deep drifts".
Best wishes,
Ken

Er, 30cm in Gloucestershire, the 'feet' St Piers prophesised, and that is an official total from those charlatans in Exeter. Not over yet by a long, long, long way

I know it's been bad there Ken and other upland areas but I think you
have experienced this many times before as has most of the country in
most winters, if not several times in some. I think it is just the media
getting me and Ron down trying to tell us it is something unusual when
it isn't. An example would be our local paper on Monday which proclaimed
that blizzards had struck South Essex and paralysed the County. There
was a maximum of 10 cm of snow, some places less than 5 cm and the
maximum wind speed was 5mph !!

30cm is 11.8 inches and certainly not "feet". Exaggerating, just like Piers!
