Default Blizzards next weekend?

"Eskimo Will" wrote in message news:...

ECMWF and now GFS quite bullish about possibility of blizzards next
weekend over northern England as fronts push north into -5C to -10C air at
850 hPa. Strong easterly winds. UKMO much less keen but ECM ensembles
quite solid for two runs now. Interesting mild/very cold battleground
coming up I reckon, but where will it be? Southern England, northern
England, Scotland?
Gobsmacking too how GFS keeps the polar jet running way south into North
Africa right into April, not good news for our farmers who could be really
struggling in a week or two :-(

There's considerable support from the Met Office:

"UK Outlook for Thursday 21 Mar 2013 to Saturday 30 Mar 2013:Many areas
fine on Thursday, though a few snow showers possible to the northeast.
Turning much more unsettled towards the southwest later Thursday, with
cloudy, wet and windy conditions then spreading slowly northeastwards on
Friday into central parts of the UK, whilst turning increasingly to
snow. These conditions continue northwards through the weekend, risk
then of significant snow over central and northern areas, though the far
northeast may remain brighter, with just occasional snow showers.
Generally cold with overnight frost, though temperatures perhaps
returning nearer normal in the south."

OK, they don't actually use the "b" word, but the set-up suggests that
any snow in northern parts next weekend would be accompanied by a strong
easterly or north-easterly.

Yes could be quite serious John, especially for the hill farmers.
Continued support from 12Z ECM and also UKMO coming on board. Also GFS and
JMA.

Custard snow warnings out from MetO issued on 19th for northern England and
north Midlands.
Note the use of the word *blizzard* .

quote
" An area of rain and sleet moving up from the south, will turn increasingly
to snow as it does so. Some heavy and persistent snowfall is likely to
develop across the higher parts of northern England and much of southern and
eastern Scotland away from immediate coastal areas, with in excess of 10 cm
of snow in many inland parts, and perhaps much more than this over hills.
Taking into account the likelihood of strong to gale force winds, some
atrocious conditions with drifting and blizzards are expected for some
upland areas in particular, and it is possible that this warning will
eventually be upgraded to Amber.

The public should be aware of the likelihood of another spell of difficult
and disruptive wintry weather.

Following a slightly quieter interlude midweek, an active frontal system
will push northwards during Thursday, increasingly coming into contact with
the block of unusually cold air in place across northern Britain, the North
Sea and Scandinavia. Snow may start towards the end of Thursday across the
higher parts of northern England but the main problems look like being into
Friday and Saturday, as a combination of strong winds and persistent snow
leads to some particularly wintry weather - especially for so late in the
season. There are some uncertainties at this stage in exactly where the
worst of the snow will be, and to what extent slightly less cold air will
creep into the south of the area covered by the Alert, so watch for updates.

Given that I am going north next weekend for a conference in Derbyshire, it
could get mighty interesting for me! At least I'll miss the Dartmoor cold
rain, LOL :-)
