Hi, All,
Precious little else to do today as I'm snowed in yet again, so I've trawled through the snow record. This winter has now had the greatest fresh falls at 09Z in this area since 1978/79, depths in cm:- (Hope the figures come out OK.) Month // 2012/13 // 1978/79 Oct // 12 // 0 Nov // 0 // 1 Dec // 16 // 32 Jan // 57 // 56 Feb // 46 // 28 March // 45 // 82 April // ?? // 3 Totals 2012/13 so far 176cm 1978/79 202cm Winter 1978/79 was recorded at nearby Low Etherley (155 metres asl), 24 year average 76cm fresh falls Winter 2012/13 at Copley (253m asl) 18 year average 84cm fresh falls. Note the very high March 1979 total, almost double this year's! Hope it's of interest, Best wishes, Ken |

I don't keep records in the way I used to and just rely on the Davis now, but 28 days of snow cover here, 5 days that were touch and go and 30m higher definitely were. Lost count of the days with temporary cover and days with snow falling, which probably would have been a record for me here. Certainly don't record depths any more, but the 16 day spell in January was tiresome with the amount of snow to shift every couple of days. The amazing thing about today (and yesterday) is that not a flake has been observed. This location has snow when others don't and none when others do, it really is a world of its own out here on the Wolds. David Mitchell. Langtoft. East Riding. |

Hi, David, The Wolds area is certainly interesting and often not in line with the rest of the North East, let alone the UK. I always found it quite continental as rain / snow bands from the west struggled to get there. In a northerly it is different again as the North Sea effect can be really strong. I also found it warm and dry in summer which appealed to me together with the chalk rocks which seemed to make it brighter. The there are the summer TS (:0) Best wishes, Ken |
