Default A bad feeling...

Never say never John, it has a habit of coming back to bite you on the bum.

There's nothing to say that we won't experience another winter like that of 1962-3 in the next 20 years or so, or another summer like that of 1976.

That's why I said "not likely" rather than "never".

But since it was the coldest winter for over 200 years it must be very
unlikely.

or another summer like that of 1976.

Though that was arguably even more extreme, I think the degree of
warming since the 1970s makes a repeat rather less unlikely than a
repeat of 1962-3 would be.

It's clear that the "Little Ice Age" was no fun to live through. But you

seem to be tilting at straw men, as I've never seen anyone suggest that

the climate at that time was wonderful.

Oh John oh John. So what climate should we be striving for?

What we have now or marginally cooler, with the emphasis on the
"marginally". But that's not likely to happen. If change is slow enough,
then there's time to adjust to it, and we can probably cope. The worry
is that over the coming decades warming may be too fast for that.

What about the summer of 1995?
I call it the forgotten summer as nobody seems to remember it, yet I
reckon it gives 1976 a run for its money. I spent that summer surfing
down at Sennen in Cornwall. To say the weather was stunning would be an
understatement.

There was also 1989 and 1990; ahhhh, those were the days.

Then again, June & July 2006 until things went off track in August but
recovered in September to give one of the warmest, sunniest and best
Autumns I've known.

Nick, 1995 was a cracking summer (Jul/Aug) but, I think 1976 just edges it taking all three summer months into account, although I was only 5yrs old back in 76.

For me, 1989 is probably the best extended summer here in the Westcountry, it seemed to start in the last fews days of April & went on well into September.

2003 as well though it was mainly just August and September it did not just
break the highest temperature record during the August heat wave but it
broke the record temperature over a wide area,

1983, another often forgotten 'good' Summer, at least in the South where I
lived at the time in Southampton.

After a cold Feb and March (a White Easter in parts of the Country which was
the same weekend as now), a cold wet April/May then warm spells in June
until Summer proper began the first weekend of July and continued until
early Sept. During that period there was only the first week of August where
temps were down to near normal before becoming warm again. It wasn't dry
throughout though, a few thunderstorms during the period kept the water
levels up. Of possible current interest, the thing I remember about the
April and May period was the high frequency of winds from an E quarter with
low pressure to the S.

1984 was good too in the same area and lasted a bit longer, starting in
early June and going on longer into Sept.

In 1995, I lived in the Central Belt of Scotland and Summer was excellent
there too. All 3 Summer months lived up to their name. IIRC, June was better
than further South. The following winter was good too, living up to its
name.

I remember 1983 as a good summer too. I have vivid recollections of
having to seek shade after mid-morning whilst weekend strawberry picking
at Leigh Sinton Farm around the middle/late June period. The River Teme
was nearby by and it was so hot by midday that we would jump in the
river to cool off.

I didn't earn that much pocket money from strawberry picking that year.
