Best:
June 2010, July 2006, August 2005.

Worst:
June 2012, July 2009, August 2008.

I remember June 1989, July 1995 & August 1995 as being good; June 1997,
July 1993 & August 2000 as being pretty bad but that is so long ago I
cannot be sure without actually looking at real data.

What about the ideal year? Within my clear memory (80s onwards)
something like

January 1985
February 1986
March 2012
April 2011
May 1992
June 2006
July 1989
August 1985
September 1997
October 1995
November 1988
December 2010

would be ideal.

By contrast, the year from hell might be:

January 2008
February 1997
March 1989, or possibly 2013 (though if we have a good summer I might
appreciate the "meteorological interest" of this month in retrospect)
April 2012
May 2013, on current form - if not May 1983
June 2012
July 1988
August 2008
September 1993
October 2000
November 2000
December 2012

Several recent months there!!!

Nick

OK Dec 2012 was a bit wet but with over 80 hours of sunshine, you cannot

I don't know what it was like where you are but hell? Are you mad?

Sorry, jumping the gun a bit there

I meant Summer of 2012 was evil, although if present weather is anything to
go by Summer 2013 could be even worse

I prefer cold and snowy winters - though not springs. I was trying to
think of the January that at my location (Southampton) gave the worst
combination of mild, dull, wet and windy (my definition of a poor
January) in recent years and came up with 2008. Could have equally
well been 2007 and 2004 to be honest, though 2007 had a longer settled
spell at the end and 2004 had the interesting "thunder snow" episode.

That said, mild *and dry and settled* Januaries are not at all bad.
Jan 2012 I would rate quite highly.

OK Dec 2012 was a bit wet but with over 80 hours of sunshine, you cannot

Again, not all those months were "hell" - it was just a flippant
comment - but I was trying to find the worst example of each month
that I could remember. Struggling to think of a December worse (from
my preferences for mid-winter weather) worse than 2012, though that
might be saying something positive about recent Decembers.

They have a bit of a halcyon glow about them but the summer when I ended my University degree (1996) seemed to be unremittingly sunny and glorious. Spent a summer playing cricket and working on Reading campus which as I'm sure you know Adam isn't the worst of places to be...

Richard

I was in between A levels and university that summer and had a gardening
job and yes, I remember that summer being warm and sunny, although I
seem to remember it deteriorated a bit in August.

I was at Reading Uni in 1997 and can distinctly remember June 1997 and
June 1998 being particularly bad.

I am surprised that it took so long before 1976 cropped up, but for me
it was too dry (Athough that was mainly due to the previous 18 months).

I suppose that it was ok for those not fetching their water from
standpipes or bowsers in the street, but it is not something that those
who did would want to repeat.

Ditto, the floods of August bank holiday in 1976.

The same problem occurred to me with choosing June 1983 as a 'best'
summer, because although the water was not off 24/7 - it was off
between 1000 and 1700 where I lived. We filled the bath with water in
the morning, and used a bucketful from that to fill the toilet cistern
each time.

Worst well that's easy, Summer of 2013.......... totally evil!!
