If you could go back through the summer months within your memory and
select individual months (June, July and August) to put together a best and worst summer ever, what would they be? In other words, what is the best/worst June, best/worst July, best/worst August you can remember? For me, the best summer would comprise of something like June & July 2006, and August 2003. The worst summer would be something like June 2012, July 2007, August 2008. As you notice, my memory is hazy before 2000 (although I remember the hot summers in the 90's) and I am relatively young, so I have chosen recent years. |

I think you would find quite a range of opinion as to what constitutes "good" and "bad". -- Norman Lynagh Tideswell, Derbyshire 303m a.s.l. |

I seem to remember the summer of 1977 was a wonderful warm and sunny affair in the Highlands of Scotland, but not in southern England. If I had to choose the best June, July and August, I would plump for them all in 1959; mainly because there were spells of hot and sunny weather, but occasional thundery breakdowns which provided some much needed rainfall, and meteorological interest. I cannot remember it that well, as I was only a schoolboy at the time, but for me that summer just about measures up to my ideal. The worst June that I remember was 1972, but there have been others not much better. July 2007 takes some beating, as does August 1962, but I prefer not to dwell on those too long. If we had those three in succession, I don't think there would many people left in the UK. |

I cannot recall any summers, good or bad, from my long life aside of the fact that the last two never quite happened. These are not the sort of things that stick in my mind. -- Gianna Peterhead, Scotland |

They have a bit of a halcyon glow about them but the summer when I ended my University degree (1996) seemed to be unremittingly sunny and glorious. Spent a summer playing cricket and working on Reading campus which as I'm sure you know Adam isn't the worst of places to be... Richard |

I'm generally hopeless at associating particular weather with particular months and years but I do remember the summer when we saw 100F for the first time in August 2003 because I was having a lovely day sipping cool drinks under the sun shade at my naturist club and having the occasional dip in the pool, thinking "this is the life" :-) Oh for glorious weather like that again... |

I remember June 1989, July 1995 & August 1995 as being good; June 1997, July 1993 & August 2000 as being pretty bad but that is so long ago I cannot be sure without actually looking at real data. -- Nick G Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |
