Default 14 on the trot - drought starts tomorrow!

Hi

I would like to update my post of the 10 July when I said "6 on the trot", I now reckon that for many of us that should now read 14 straight sunny days.

As far as I can see in Mid Devon the first of them occurred on Friday the 5th of July, and with today looking set fair that brings the total to 14 days on the trot.

Bruce.

PS The drought starts tomorrow!

I think Bruce may be referring to the old (very old?) definition of a
drought which was based on there being a fortnight without measurable
rain - or something like that.

Dead right Graham - a meteorological drought.

Wikipedia says this about the 'old' definition:

"A drought was defined as 15 consecutive days with less than 0.25mm (0.01 inches) rain on any one day"

and as far as I can see it says this is the new improved version:

"A drought is usually defined as an extended period of weather (usually around 3 weeks) where less than a third of the usual precipitation falls"

As far as I can see the old method is very clear and the new method totally ambiguous with the use of the word "around" very imprecise...

You're quite right. The old definition had at least a certainty about it, and made people sit up and take notice when it was announced- partly,I suspect, because it has a Biblical ring to it.
While we're on the subject, in Bristol we've had 9" rain this year so far-2" more than last December-a fitting end to Bristol's wettest year since the 1850's

Yes, 14 sunny days 'on the trot' here bringing the monthly sunshine
total to 220 hours (1st - 19:15 18th).

As for a drought, well no water shortages but the reservoir levels are
now starting to drop quickly. But there is an environmental drought in
that everything is shrivelling up. The Devon Bank is usually ablaze with
knapweed, scabious, betony etc etc at this time of year but they have
all gone to seed. One spark and the whole lot will go up!

My lawn is now straw but the recompense is that it no longer needs
mowing. The allotment is a not all good - small spuds and the cool
climate plants bolted. But have been picking toms and cucumbers in
abundance for the last two weeks. Should get a good crop of aubergines
and butternut squashes and even the watermelon looks promising! Needs a
lot of watering though. Runners are OK(ish), should be picking them soon.

A Mediterranean style summer making the countryside resemble the
Mediterranean at this time of year, i.e., brown.

A lot of people are saying that 'compared to this time last year......'.
Well, they'll have to stop saying that because from tomorrow onwards,
the weather in July 2012 improved markedly from the 19th onwards and was
the start of much drier, sunnier and warmer weather.

I'm glad you mentioned that. There was 207 hours of sunshine last July at Bossulow, near Penzance. That's marginally above normal and was quite an achievement after the 1st half of the month.

Mind you already around 200 hours this July.

Whilst the two marrows are certainly bearing fruit the courgettes (
all three plants) appear to be male only. Internet research suggests
I have to be patient!
