uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged. |

I thought I ought to post this picture of the North Pole ice station while
it is still there. The meltponds are advancing on it fast. http://psc.apl.washington.edu/northp...0718074059.jpg Cheers, Alastair. |

Here's the story from 2002-12: http://www.arctic.noaa.gov/detect/ice-npole.shtml The only archive I can find for camera 2 for this year is this: http://psc.apl.washington.edu/northp...BCAM2/ARCHIVE/ -- Graham P Davis, Bracknell, Berks. Yes Alastair, its been exceptionally warm 80 degrees north this year http://wattsupwiththat.com/reference.../sea-ice-page/ and what with the sea ice melt in the southern hemisphere http://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index/i...timeseries.png Worrying times. |

Here's the story from 2002-12: http://www.arctic.noaa.gov/detect/ice-npole.shtml Interesting, I had not seen that. The only archive I can find for camera 2 for this year is this: http://psc.apl.washington.edu/northp...BCAM2/ARCHIVE/ As you are probably aware, the main site for the North Pole webcams is he http://www.arctic.noaa.gov/gallery_np.html but the pictures shown there are not kept up to date. So, I posted the latest one I could find from that archive, as I have also done in my reply to Lawrence. In the past, the cameras have fallen over when the snow on which they were based melted. It will be interesting to see what happens this year, now the scientists have experience from previous years. Cheers, Alastair. -- Graham P Davis, Bracknell, Berks. It is warming up now at 80N. http://ocean.dmi.dk/arctic/plots/mea...meanT_2013.png But my post was not about that. Melt ponds form each year in the Arctic but this year a large one has formed around one of the two web cameras. http://psc.apl.washington.edu/northp...0719073910.jpg The other camera is surrounded by snow http://psc.apl.washington.edu/northp...0719081315.jpg There is nothing to worry about - YET. But there will be if the dive seen starting here continues: http://www.ijis.iarc.uaf.edu/en/home/seaice_extent.htm Cheers, Alastair. |

I think that site stopped being the main one last year and this one began to take over: http://psc.apl.washington.edu/northpole/ I think they are now the ones who deploy the instruments. The amount of information was also less last year,no met or ice-thickness info as far as I know. Perhaps NOAA haven't had the funding? Must have a look into it when I find the energy - too hot. -- Graham P Davis, Bracknell, Berks. 'To do is to be' - Nietsche 'To be is to do' - Kant 'Do be do be do' - Sinatra |
