Here is a summary of the latest NWP output, for noon (GMT) on Thursday.
Issued 0559z, 28/09/03. ECMWF: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Recm1201.gif High pressure covers the UK, with easterlies for southern areas and westerlies for Scotland and northern England. The high builds and sinks over France at T+144, while the Atlantic high builds and moves NE'wards. This brings northerlies and NW'lies over the UK, strongest over Scotland. High pressure builds to the west of the UK at T+168, with NNW'lies and NE'lies for the UK. MetO: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rukm1201.html Unavailable at time of issue. GFS: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rtavn1081.gif NE'lies cover much of the UK, with low pressure over the English Channel. The NE'lies continue at T+120 over England and Wales, although a weak ridge brings variable winds to most of Scotland and Northern Ireland. 850hPa temperatures range from +3C over Scotland to +7C over southern England. The winds become NW'lies at T+144 as the Atlantic high ridges strongly towards Greenland. The high builds further at T+168, to over 1040hPa. High pressure over and to the east of Greenland also builds, with the result of a strong northerly flow over the UK. The northerlies continue on day 8, but by day 9 a ridge collapses over the UK bringing westerlies for most. The westerlies continue on day 10, with low pressure to the south of Iceland. GEM: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rgem1201.gif A ridge covers Scotland, with easterlies and ENE'lies further south from a low over Brest. The low fills at T+120, although England and Wales still lie under ENE'lies. Northern Scotland is affected by westerlies from the Icelandic low, while the rest of the UK lies under light and variable winds. 850hPa temperatures range from +5C over NE Scotland tp +7C over SW England. By T+144 a NW'ly or NNW'ly flow covers the UK, as the Atlantic high merges with a high to the north of Greenland. JMA: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rjma1201.html The Japanese run shows a col over the UK, with light winds for all. 850hPa temperatures range from +4C over northern Scotland to +8C over Kent. The Icelandic low fills and moves SE'wards over the UK at T+144, due to a ridge towards Greenland from the Atlantic high. SW'lies cover much of England and Wales, with NNW'lies for Northern Ireland and variable winds for Scotland. The low deepens over Wales at T+168, with cyclonic winds over the UK. Model overlay charts (GEM/GFS/JMA): http://expert.weatheronline.co.uk/da.../ens/pslv.html The chart shows a large high to the east of Newfoundland, with lows near Biscay and Iceland. In summary, today's runs agree that the UK will lie between two lows on Thursday, with easterlies for southern areas and westerlies for the far north. Over the weekend, it looks likely that the Atlantic high will send a strong ridge northwards, bringing either northerlies (GEM, ECM, GFS) or unsettled weather as the Icelandic low is forced SE'wards (JMA). |
