The web-cam of the Barneo ice-station at 83.8N 4.5W yesterday, shows a
ship in the background. I reckon the buoy is about 80nm from open water.

Is that purely out of interest Graham -which is nice; or is there a point.

Just out of interest. After five months of watching a buoy with a ridge
in the background and the only mild excitement being a melt-pond
forming and then draining away, it came as a bit of a shock this morning
to see the ice-breaker in the background. I can only assume it's there
to pick up the buoys and any other instruments before the floe goes
charging off through the Fram Strait.

Odd. I can still access it - and from a different computer.

Looks like the NE passage has been open (without ice breakers I mean) this
year for a number of weeks (and maybe a few yet to come). But the passage
between the ice pack and Severnaya Zemlya is the only part that looks a
little dodgy. Anyone have better information as to whether it's been freely
navigable or not?

No, just a rather lazy brain. Should be NM of course.
