Could see tops of storms to the west on Friday afternoon. They were saying in the hotel that Tenerife was getting much worse weather. Simon S (South Yorkshire) |

And I don't mean global warming. More like the ITCZ passing over the island, but I doubt that is the reason. Perhaps it is warm SSTs but that would be normal for this time of year. Surely a metre a day is not normal at any time of year? Cheers, Alastair. |

A Russian girl is missing, presumed swept out to sea, after ignoring warnings against swimming. Of meteorological interest is the amount of rain that has fallen in the normally arid south of the island. Over the last two days, 133mm has been recorded at Tenerife Sur airport, more than their average for an entire year (116mm). The cause of all this was a very active cold front from the Atlantic coming up against a very warm and humid air mass over the Canary Islands. |

We were fotunate enough to spend a day on La Palma last August while on the P&O Oceana. The wind was a 'cool' Ne'ly and in the port, which is situated on the eastern side of the island, it was cloudy, cool with spost of rain. We went on a trip to the crater which took us up to the mountain ridge, where we were in fig and drizzle, then through a mile long tunnel to the other side, which faced west, to our complete amazment the sky was completely blue, like a mediterranean summer and not even a glimps of any cloud around the mountain/volcano ridge. As we headed back in the afternoon through the tunnel, we were back in cloud and drizzle. The people on the boat who adn't been on the trip didn't beleive us.
