Default The dangers of reliance on automation

My Davis VP tells me that there's been moderate to heavy rain for the past
hour. It is, of course, only accumulated snow melting in the funnel. Do the
automatic stations in the "official" observing network have heated raingauges?
If not, they must suffer from this same problem.

The Met Office AWS's use a present weather sensor. They have fibre glass raingauges so no heater in them. Gone are the good old days when the tilting siphon gauge had a heater and we used to melt the snow in the 5 inch manual gauge.
