Default Wind now gusting 80mph in west Cornwall

Recent gust of 83mph at Land's End, 76kt at St Ives and it's still increasing.

Now having to turn off the computer as the electricity supply is about to give up.

Wildest weather so far, and that's saying something for this winter. It's going to be a damaging couple of high tides.

Electricity's on at the moment, though it isn't in many parts of Penzance. Recent gust of 87mph at Land's End, 90mph on Scilly, though it's died back a bit now, before it picks up again overnight. Strongest winds for a few years.

Plenty of sirens from the prom area, probably due to flooding, but I'm not venturing out this time. A large chunk of tree recently landed in the garden, fortunately missing the Stevenson Screen.

All bus services in west Cornwall now suspended, many roads blocked, the number of trees down probably in 3 figures. A30 into Penzance closed due to debris on the road. Last train due into Penzance appears to have hit a tree near Lostwithiel.

A bit of classic this one.

Gust of 105mph recorded on St Martin's Scilly, 93mph at St Mary's, 88mph Land's End, all between 17:00 & 19:00.

At that time the wind was a F9-10 across west Cornwall and F11 at Land's End and on Scilly, yet we had a yellow wind warning. The wind has now dropped below gale force, even at Land's End, and an orange warning has just come into force. Just thought I'd mention it.

I was planning to check the cpttage at Mousehole about now. The prom and road through Newlyn are still flooded by the sea, the back road is blocked by branches etc. The prom has been badly damaged.

Apparently Mullion harbour is also badly damaged after years of neglect. (owned by the NT - who would rather spend the money on Piskey tea towels and destroying hottentot figs which hold the cliffs together)

When the tide drops a bit I'll have a look around and probably upload a few photos.

Thank you for your concern. I've just checked and the wife, daughter, rabbit & guinea pig all seem fine!

It is thanks Dave (luckily I had the roof replaced a couple of years back and it's well above the high tide mark) though many properties around Mount's Bay are not. The sea wall at Lamorna, which has been awaiting repairs since 2004! (the last really big sea in Mount's Bay) has finally really crumbled, the sea surging into properties no longer protected. There is a similar problem at Mousehole where the baulks across the harbour mouth have broken, allowing the sea to surge in.

It's not often you get gusts 80-90mph, even in west Cornwall. THe 100mph recorded on Scilly must have been a bit scary.

It'll take months to repair and disrupt the economy of the SW no end. The whole of devon and Cornwall are now cut off from the railway network both between Exeter and Taunton and now at Dawlish.

Ouch! 2 more storms to come, with the weekend looking particularly bad. You'll see Dawlish make national news tonight, for all the wrong reasons!
