That David Shukman has done several reports on the recent extreme weather that amuse/infuriate me. You know the one were he gleefully tells the viewer that the jet stream this winter has been working like a giant weather factory/machine churning out storm after storm on a conveyor belt and firing them at the UK...
cue graphic of jet stream David, welcome to the world of the weather, its always worked like that, and thankfully will always continue to work like that, as long as the sun is there to keep it going. Apologies for that last bit about the sun, I nearly got caught up in anology speak for a moment... |

Have you noticed how much the Gulf stream has gone out of fashion in these 'what's to blame for this weather' reports? Though a reporter earlier this year mentioned that the 'Gulf stream had reached speeds of nearly 200mph...' Can you imagine the effect that would cause. |

Another one a few weeks ago was "The Polar Vortex", not a phrase used by meteorologists in this context. In any case there are two vortices, if we have to use that word, one over Canada and the other over eastern Siberia and this winter that split is very marked, ironically. It doesn't normally fire them right at the UK though, if it did then the rainfall amounts and storminess we've seen this winter would be classed as normal. That last bit about "firing them at the UK" is important. |
