Default Scorching El Nino event could scupper England's World Cup - utter rubbish.

This is an example of a hack being an idiot. El Nino conditions are not even forecast to have developed by the time the World Cup is played!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-27343057

It is these ridiculous climate scare stories, promulgated by people with very little knowledge (but surely, being ""environment correspondent" should give you a little more insight than, say "restaurant critic", but in this case, sadly and roundly (haha) no!), which harm science. It is very similar to the idiocy spouted on here, recently, about scientists being able to link drought in Syria to AGW. They can't and these stories, the source of which is never scientists, just play into the hands of climate deniers.

It may be hot in Manaus for England's first game; indeed it is likely to be warmer than Manchester, but it will have sod-all to do with ENSO.

El Nino will play a blinder.
Not sure who he plays for though.
Certainly not England.
Still, it will be a useful excuse for not progressing far in the competition.

========================================

The BBC, in your link, say that an El Nino predicted with 75% certainty
fizzled out. But here they are predicting an El Nino this winter with a
certainty of 78% so perhaps that will happen.
http://www.mercurynews.com/science/c...ability-raised

But they are saying it will happen in the winter. El Ninos are so named
after the Boy Child who was born at Christmas. That will be long after
England have returned from Brazil, triumphant or other wise.

They are also saying that the drought in California is the worst ever
recorded - more evidence of AGW having a noticable effect.

Cheers, Alastair.

El Niño is the nickname of Fernando Torres, who plays for world champions Spain
(and mediocre English team Chelsea).

By the way, please note the tilde on the n, which makes it a different letter (and sound)
in Spanish. I know most UK keyboards don't have that letter, but you can get it by holding
down the Alt key while typing 164 on the numeric keypad.

It was of course started by Dawlish who, early in the thread, decided to insult me (wet blanket, etc).
Had I insulted him first? No.
He does n't know he's doing it.
Suffers from a nasty type of OCD unfortunately so must not be too hard on him.
