uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged. |

John I found the same article! And yes it is a great pity that its not magnetism data that I'm after - I think that in itself speaks volumes about the non-availability of climate data in the UK! As far as I can see there are daily records extending back to 1773, which may form part of the daily CET composite temperature series. This interesting article from the International Journal of Climatology http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/hadobs/h...2_dailyCET.pdf seems to say that only Dec 1786 Kew data was used in the construction of the CET. Dick Lovett That's Syon House, Kew, which is not Kew Observatory (which happens to be in Richmond). Indeed, unless Syon House has moved, it's currently in Brentford! It doesn't look as if Kew Obs was used in the CET. |

Well you don't have to guess who was to blame for that: At the end of 1980, Kew Observatory was sold. By this time, experimental work and the verification of meteorological instruments had been moved to Bracknell. Today, in an age when most meteorological observatories serve aviation, an industry barely 100 years old, the climatological record from Kew is a very long one. Its passing marked a time of change in the Meteorological Office as the need arose for every Meteorological Office site to be economically justifiable. Margarat Stupid Thatcher the cow as the need arose what need is that not covered by taxes? |

I was at Kew Observatory in the late sixties, there were some fascinating old documents there; I hope these were kept. I hope WetterZentrale were given copies. I'm almost sorry they lost. |
