Having read Philip Edens excellent piece in the Torygraph this morning about
the difficulty of forecasting persistent low cloud over (mostly eastern)
Britain, I confess to feeling extremely irritated by the cheerful burblings
of our weather masters,who have for the last few days been saying how nice
and summery this weekend was gonna be.
As the High migrated west on Friday it was obvious to even the most
optimistic weather watcher that a chilly northerly was about to set in with
its attendant cloud ,so all the poor unfortunates who had been trapped in
inside jobs through a steamy week would be very peed off as they huddled
under their barbecue canopies trying to pretend it was still summer.
For some reason the Met Office must feel responsible for issuing upbeat and
cheerful outlooks despite the opposite being likely ,as portrayed in the
very British habit of praising our 'brave' sports heroes of 'football
'cricket' and rugby' who normally come second.
Come on Met Office ,face facts ,we are British and can take it !!

PS Of course, none of this applies to Northerners and those in the south who
hate the sun and break out into a muck sweat when temperatures exceed 15C.!

I had the misfortune of being in Sussex for the steamy hot day on Friday:-( The
cloudy skies and 15 deg in the Peak District this morning are much more my cup
of tea :-)

A bit Eastern bias there Ron. I think it was ok yesterday in large parts
of the West and Midlands but not so clever today. I agree though about
the false optimism of bright spells here. My youngest daughter was a
bridesmaid (again, always the...)and requested a forecast just a few
hours before as it was hoped to be outdoors. I confidentally predicted a
spot of early drizzle then bright at times, ideal for the photographs.
It poured down for a while apparently (mid Essex) and was pretty grim
all day and had to be held inside. I'm not that popular!

Just got back from IOW and it was awesome, 8 days of sun perfect temps (near
the coasts) then back to this GLOOM!!
So I also near cheering up, can't believe I left that for this
Back around 5 pm yesterday in heavy rain (just like when we left) and not
even seen a hint of a bright spell yet!!
Sure the forecast said fine?????????????

The old weather front moving from the east was always going to
produce showers in our areas and 'one or two heavy bursts' was
mentioned in the forecast. The positioning of the front with it's
attendant line of showers was also accurately predicted.

So all in all, I though it was an excellent forecast.

Wasn't too bad here in the end, Ron - a clearance mid afternoon led to long sunny spells. Looked as if the gloom very gradually cleared earlier the further west you were.
