Default Solent MRSC: Good News, bad news.

As we know, the Solent MRSC SYNOP station has a far from ideal
exposure that sometimes shows up on sunny days as an unexpectedly high
maximum temperature due to shelter from N-NE winds by the coastguard
buildings. Well we won't have to worry about that for much longer as
the Solent MRSC site will close in September and be sold, as part of
the coastguard reorganization.

The good news is that last October, the Met Office told me they had
earmarked the adjacent Daedalus airfield to hopefully re-site it and,
of course that would almost certainly provide a better exposure for
the temperature instruments - the anemometer too as long as they don't
once again stick it on top of what will be a new 100 foot radio tower!

The bad news is that after 8 months, the latest I have from them this
month is that there will be a data gap when Solent MRSC closes, as
negotiations for the new site are still ongoing. Something similar
happened when Woodford closed IIRC, I wish I knew why these things
take so darned long to organize - though to be fair, there is general
redevelopment going on at Daedalus, which may need to be completed
first. Still annoying though.

Update.

Operations are this week being moved from Solent MRSC (now an MRCC) at
Lee-on-the-Solent, to the new National Marine Operations Centre in
Fareham, and Solent MRCC will close.

Met Office observations department have advised me that the SYNOP site
at Solent will remain operational until the end of January 2015. It
will be moved onto the adjacent Daedalus airfield as soon as possible
but due to planned redevelopment/building work, there are currently no
dates for this so there may be a data gap after January.

Portland MRCC is also closing and operations will move to the Fareham
centre next week, but as the MRCC is located in Weymouth, I assume
that there won't be any impact on the Portland SYNOP observations.

It will be sad to see the old coastguard buildings at Solent and in
Weymouth empty.
