According to the website, it is done to make the most recent ones more visible. To see lightning in almost real-time, we have added a new animation. Each lightning strike is marked with a white expanding circle. I didn't see such an explanation there? -- Paul Hyett, Cheltenham |

That means it has been mentioned in USW before as I only collect them I don't go looking. Which leads to the obvious question of how you missed it? No really good storms here for a while? -- Paul Hyett, Cheltenham |

Although I've not seen the explanation for the expanding circles, they seem to expand at the same rate as the speed of sound, so wonder if its meant to coincide with the actual "bang" when the circle reaches your location. Of course, with the site's own 4 second delay, you'll have no warning of the thunderclap at the end of the road!!! jim, Northampton |

That's why I couldn't really determine the above. -- Paul Hyett, Cheltenham |

Yes of course I know Google Maps ! It's just that I can't remember seeing a radar or lightning site which allows such close-in zooming. Colin Youngs Brussels |
