uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged. |

Obviously difficult to predict but haven't seen much on radar over S.E
and East Anglia. Max 26.4C here today on a dry and mainly sunny day. All the action was Friday here really. I imagine the organisers of The Open at Liverpool are a bit miffed having modified it to a two tee start and finishing 4 hours early to accomodate delays for the torrential rain and storms that didn't materialise. A bit of bad luck for the forecasters as it seemed to wrap itself all around the Wirral but they came in for a bit of stick from the comentators. |

More of a concern to the organisers must be the moral problem of what has happened;
As leader, Rory M should have started his round mid afternoon. Because of the changes in start time to avoid the forecast (and they did materialise) mid to late afternoon heavy showers/thunderstorms, he was back in the clubhouse by the time they arrived. So if the changes hadn't been made he would have to played through the worst conditions of the day (BBC blog "hammering down"), just as pot luck dictates in such events. If anybody should be "miffed" it should be competitors who were denied the sole benefit of the more benign morning conditions. Jim |

Radar showing a whole batch heading NEE from originally Le Havre; I'm afraid that lot will miss SE London and Essex. Unless of course there's been a major traffic diversion. |

To attempt to predict whether or not thunderstorms will occur at a specific point 24 hours ahead is a mug's game. The science isn't that good. I can't say that I'm surprised that the weather evolved rather differently to what was forecast. -- Norman Lynagh Tideswell, Derbyshire 303m a.s.l. http://peakdistrictweather.org |

Norman Lynagh Tideswell, Derbyshire 303m a.s.l. http://peakdistrictweather.org Or even 3 hours ahead it would seem. At approx 14:00 yesterday the forecast was amended from sunny spells to show showers and then a thunderstorm at 17:00, probably based on the fact there were signs of showers developing off Brittany. (At the same time the the maximum temperature forecast was reduced from 20C to 19C, around the time it was 22C at Camborne and 21C at Culdrose & Penzance.) Not a drop, an afternoon of sunny periods. In fact still no measurable rain since Thursday evening, despite many, many hours during the intervening period when there was an 50% or greater chance of rain. Yesterdays Max 21.3C Last night a fresher 15.2C 09:00 today 19.1C & mainly sunny. In fact it's a glorious moring http://www..nci-stives.org/webcam.htm Graham Penzance |
