I posted this on UKWW on Friday and thought some on here might like to see this panorama I took on my phone on Friday of the most impressive sky I've seen in the UK when I was down at my place in Whitstable.

I initially thought it was a supercell but David Smart (former poster Waghorn on here) tells me it's been classified as a Mesoscale Convective System. Either way, this cloud feature coming up against a textbook Whitstable sunset gave something nothing short of breathtaking. The beach was full of gasps as frequent CG lightning struck in the distance. And we had quite a strong wind from the outflow from the system/gust front.

Anyhow - back up my tree!

Richard

Saw several shots of this feature on Twitter last night and it could
just be seen in the gloom over Canterbury cricket ground just before
the downdraught hit and caused cessation of play as the floodlight
towers had to be lowered.

Tremendous picture - thanks.

The explosive development of this (and possibly one or two more )over northern France could be seen on IR satellite sequences.
The apparently layered structure is interesting and I wonder what the explanation is. It is often seen in supercell storms in the American Mid-West but I have never seen it live; certainly nothing like the pic here.
