The last couple of days have made me think on several occasions that
there must be something wrong with the anemometer as it has for long periods registered 0 mph. I would go outside and check to see if the cups are whizzing round but no, totally stationary. From 23:45 on the 6th to 09:00 on the 7th the anemometer registered no wind. And again today from 22:15 on the 7th to 11:00 there was no measurable wind. Normally there is a land breeze at night that blows at 2 to 5 mph all night until it stalls just after dawn and the sea breeze kicks in from mid-morning. More the remarkable today was that the sun was shining all morning yet no wind was registered until 11:00. Total wind run for today was just 21 miles and maximum gust was 9 mph. Given my near coastal location and it is summer, and the was sun shining, this is very 'windless'. -- Nick Gardner Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |

The only waves I saw in The Solent on Friday were those generated by the various craft on the water; oil tankers, ferries, power boats, etc. On a slightly contrasting note, doesn't the Fastnet Race take place today? Only force 8 to 9 in the English Channel ! I assume this race, too, will need to be abandoned, especially in light of the 1979 disaster. I assume this race, too, will need to be abandoned, especially in light of the 1979 disaster. Nigel During 1979 the wind reached F10 with a swell between 20' and 30' Currently the area from Land's End, Sevenstones to Scilly is reporting around F6 the sea is choppy, but the swell is actually quite small (around 6' - 8' at Sevenstones) Even at Sennen, facing into the wind 1 mile from Land's End it's not particularly rough, the swimming area is not red flagged (which is a not uncommon occurence in a 'normal' summer but has yet to happen this year) in fact it's busy in the ground swell. Sennen Harbour http://www.sennen-cove.com/harbourcam.htm The surf beach http://www.streamdays.com/camera/vie..._beach_surfcam (they may red flag it at high tide) So conditions are very different to 1979, but these days who knows.. In Mount's Bay at Newlyn they were advised to cancel the 2pm raft race, and wisely ignored the advice. With no real swell and the wind a F4 offshore it was flat, the inshore lifeboat was creating a wake for the rafts in order to increase the excitement level. It was also sunny and around 20C I've just got back & might upload some pics lately. Basically a blustery but perfectly pleasant day down here, maximum gust at my station 32mph. Graham Penzance |

Here I am so sheltered that a lot of nights register as almost windless. -- Paul Hyett, Cheltenham |

Graham Penzance Boardmasters cancelled at Newquay? Tents blown down? Somewhat different on N. Cornwall coast? We've been battered by westerly a gale here all day. Nice and sunny though. Len Wembury, SW Devon Well, there was no useable surf, as the small swell there was was blown out and unsurfable. There have been gusts to 50mph on the north Cornwall coast, but looking at various places I can find nowhere where the mean speed reached gale force, even Land's End. In fact most places in west Cornwall peaked at F5 (see Camborne http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/...t_weather.html ) Sennen harbour faces north, ( http://www.sennen-cove.com/harbourcam.htm - sea conditions still look far from stormy) and the main beach faces NW, and was open to swimmers and surfers all day, despite regularly having the roughest conditions in Cornwall. The swell at Sevenstones peaked at 8.2' which is totally ordinary, and was exceeded on at least 1 occasion in July. The south coast was positively benign A few photos from mid afternoon on Newlyn green http://www.easterling.freeserve.co.uk/raft.html Does it look stormy? It simply hasn't been stormy here, possibly windier where you are as Bertha was still deepening as it passed Cornwall. I simply report the weather as it is in west Cornwall, and post links to show data and pictures, so it's rather irritating to have it questioned in a patronising way. Because the weather is worse somewhere else is irrelevant. Graham |
