Stephen also points out how relatively frequent such events are in north Cornwall. Boscastle was flooded to a similar level twice in the 1950s. (I've seen photos which show the water at virtually the same level.) As only one of the 1950's events has a reliable rainfall record, most reports have a habit of combining bits of both events. The excessive damage done in the last flood was largely due to the cars being washed out of the nice new large flat tarmac NT car park (which has been rebuilt).
