A most interesting post Scott. Many thanks. Despite working in Ilford in
the 1970's that incident was never mentioned. One lightning incident I
do recall occurred in Enfield when I was in the sixth form. The Spurs
footballer, John White, died in July 1964 when he was struck by
lightning while playing golf. Sometime earlier I'd seen him and a
certain Mr J Greaves playing at a game in Edinburgh. It was Edinburgh
Select vs The Army but I can't remember who was on which side.

It may have been pushed from people's minds by WW2 beginning only a
couple of weeks later. Seven deaths in one thunderstorm must be one of
the worst counts for any British thunderstorm.

Yes most interesting. Especiallly as my in-laws lived just around the
corner. My father-in-law was a gardener in Valentines Park in more
recent years. I'm surprised he never mentioned it but as you say - more
pressing problems in the weeks ahead.
