Yesterday it remained generally cloudy, just a few sunny intervals. A disappointment after all the sunshine of the month so far. (It did clear on the north coast). The temperature hardly changed all day. The max was 18.7C (low by recent standards) which it reached around 14:00 and again around 21:00!
The visibility was moderate to poor, verging on misty at times, and never more than about 6 miles. Some notable changes now though:- High pressure has now lost all control, pressure 1007mb and falling. It's still dry (ignore the rainfall radar, little if any is reaching the ground) & cloudy. The cloud is now medium/high level frontal cloud, rather attractive actually with lumpy dense patches and glimpses of bluish sky. The visibility has improved, the horizon has made a return. It's windy, recent gust to 27mph in Penzance, well over 35mph at Land's End & on Scilly. The well predicted F5 has arrived, and the wind is still increasing. One thing that hasn't changed is the inherent warmth of the air 18.4C @ 08:50. I note there's some clear skies not far to the SW, which may push up this far for the afternoon Graham Penzance |

Up on the Island at St Ives it's currently (16:15) gusting to 50mph, it's cloudy and it's still 20C! (According to the MetO, the sea state at Porthminster, St Ives facing directly into a good F6, is slight http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/w...cast/gbujekhtw .) I'd be interesting to see the programming that came to that conclusion. At Porthcurno, with some shelter from Logan Rock, an Atlantic swell is visible. http://www.minack.com/webcams.htm . Quite confused seas at the moment with the strong easterly wind against a 3ft swell from the west. In Penzance sun often visible through the frontal cloud, but rarely strong enough to give distinct shadows. Despite this and the F5-6 onshore wind it still reached 21.2C. This air really is warm. Not even 1 drop of rain in the gauge today, still only 0.9mm this month, all on 1st. Graham Penzance http://penzanceweather.atspace.com/weather.html |
