Phil,Zonality is really due to a surface high over the Azores or Biscay or even sometimes the
Alps. The main thing is that the jetstrean (Normally SW'ly in this case) steers deep Atlantic
Lows towards Iceland or Northern Scotland. Hence the prevailing surface southwesterlies.
Obviously at time the lows (and therefore the upper jet) will be a little further south leading to
very cyclonic and mild weather over UK. However when the southwesterly jet becomes
distorted (as now) Lows become complex and often drift towards Spain. A blocked (surface
high over Scandinavia) tends to send one portion of the jet south into Biscay or the western
Med - with consequent easterlies over UK, and these can be very persistent.
Simplistically lows move northeast across Northen UK (Zonality near enough), if they are forced
to either move to the south of us or up the west coast of Greenland...the upper flow is
contorted, and easterly steering is lost.
The distortion of the upper flow is the first sign of a breakdown in the normal zonality.
Cheers
Paul

I do live in the past but that is only because that most present posts on here are NONSENSE. I challenge ANYONE to better this explanation of zonality by the late great Paul Bartlett. TA Big Jim
