Quite impressive. Below freezing widely in SE and Central Southern England (eg -2 in Wokingham) but + 6.7 deg as I arrived at work on Fleet Street just after 0800.

When I was forecasting at London Weather Centre in the late 70s/early 80s the default minimum for central London in winter was 7C. i.e. if you were unsure, just go for 7C and you would not be far out on a radiation night. As you observe it can be -4C in the sticks and 7C in central London. I suspect the heat island has spread a bit too? Only exception was with a strong wind advecting colder air in, one day the temperature flat-lined day/night at -1C in a cold easterly. Yes when I worked in London, it was amazing how chilly the parks got, sometimes ground frosty but with nearby streets 5 degrees higher. My experience was around High Holborn. Which reminds me of the occasional very pleasant hour out of the office on a Sunday morning cycling or walking down there to make the observation. Stephen. |

There's the lesser suburban heat island too where I live. There is nothing truly urban near me (halfway between Portsmouth and Southampton, and well outside Fareham town) but plenty of suburban sprawl. So, my back garden minumim was +0.2C but the much more exposed Southampton airport (also Hurn) reported -2C for a while, similar to my grass minimum of -2.2. -- Dave Fareham (W) http://www.wunderground.com/personal...ID=IENGLAND600 |

I'm 7.2 miles as the crow flies east from Fleet Street and it was -1.3C before the temp began rising at 0658z. I ride in most days and it always amazes me the difference in just a few miles. -- ------------------------------ This email was sent by a company owned by Pearson plc, registered office at 80 Strand, London WC2R 0RL. These unquestionably contribute to the UHI. May be accounting for 3 Degrees according to Will's weekday/weekend figures. A good PhD (Piled high and Deep) topic for some geographer if you ask me. Len ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Are the sewers colder at the weekends Len ? Altitude also has a factor with calm nights,I live just a couple of miles from Scott, but around 250ft,so on calm clear nights my mins are several degrees above the lower lying places around here like Wanstead. Indeed when I lived in the middle of industrial Stratford during the '63 winter which was very built up and heated by many coal fires (no central heating in those days !),I clocked a minimum of minus 13C on the morning of January 23rd.. Yes my clogs were too cold to wear without wrapping my feet with newspaper first....... RonB |
