Default Stability and smoke behaviour

I took a couple of images earlier today when there was a surface inversion
here. The effect on plume behaviour is fairly clear to see. Much can be
learned about the temperature structure of the lowest layers by looking at
how chimney smoke behaves. I intend to add to this page when I get some
decent images of other plume types.

I must admit that my cigarette smoke plume behaviour, and the relationship
with stability, is directly proportional to my alcohol intake.

Mike, a very interesting analysis and comparison indeed. A nice illustration of
the importance of good visual observation. Also, I am amused at the other
'inversion' in today's weather ; a beautiful blue sky in your camera shot but
grey, gloomy, misty and - at times quite wet - in the Thames valley. About
time too.....
