Default Metres of fresh snow over the Alps?

By end of next week if 12Z GFS is to believed with a 200 knot NW'ly jet
pointing straight at the Alps on Thursday night 29th. Perfect situation for
a massive snowfall there. Could be quite dangerous.

I've been keeping an eye out on that Will. I'm off to Val D'Isere next week and certainly looks interesting. But freezing levels could get quite high, perhaps up to 2000 metres depending on the exact position of the jet. Should be okay at 2000 metres, but I guess could be a close call! GFS M-Europa seems to be hinting at 15cm of accumulated liquid precipitation for the week.

Anyway should make a change from the "Bartlett High", which is all that I've seemed to have got over recent years.

The Valtellina around the south side of the range saw 140cm at the weekend. The valley was green just days before - once it starts after a very dry season it takes a long time to stop

Last year, the top station at 3,000m saw nearly 7 metres of snow over the season

Looks like the jet will be a little further south and west. Which means less snow but lower freezing levels. We are expecting 50-70cms here in Val D'Isere (resort at 1850 metres asl) tomorrow's maximums will not be much above -10c. Quite exciting really!
