Default Haze, what Haze?

I keep reading about pollution and haze, but as I got back to Penzance early on Thursday after 2 days 'up country' in the haze, it was still sparklingly clear.

In fact there were 5 consecutive gloriously sunny days in west Cornwall with good visibility, see http://www.sennen-cove.com/imapr15.htm

Not so yesterday, Friday was the coolest day of the week in Penzance (probably the only part of the UK where this was the case) under stubborn low cloud, max of just 12.8C.

Still, the sun's back this morning.

As far as I recall, the SW wasn't expected to be badly affected by the
pollution, if at all. Worst area was meant to be the SE of England with
the fetch from the continent.

Not sure which direction you were looking Graham but, it was very hazy here in SW Devon on Wednesday and Thursday. Nice and sunny mind.
Could n't see Cornwall at all.
Rame Head 5 miles, only just seen through the murk.
Dodman Point 33 miles, usually seen easily most days, no chance.

Well, I'm around 80 miles west of you Len!

I was in Bedfordshire Weds, but going by what I was told, and the webcams, visibility was certainly in excess of 15 miles.

As I staggered off the sleeper early Thursday, Lizard point was very clear from Penzance and I'd put the visibility at least 20 miles, as it was at Sennen in the afternoon, hence my original link to the photos.

Thursday's visibility was, if anything, better than Weds, but the sky colour indicated some pollution above. It would appear that the air was cleaner at the lowest levels, hence the good, verging on very good visibility.

An outstanding example of this occure on 8th April 2011. There was a dust cloud so thick, that although there was no cloud, the sun could barely be seen. My solar panels produced barely 60% of what would have been expected. Despite this visibility near sea level was good to very good. The light was really weird, pic http://www.turnstone-cottage.co.uk/dust.html
