There's a rather good article about Robert Fitzroy currently on the BBC
website:

Lived just up the road to me in Church Road Crystal Palace and is buried in the Church cemetery on the junction of South Norwood Hill, Church Road and Beulah Hill. Its good to know that only some 100 yards from where his remains lay that adult men are having sex in the undergrowth of Beulah Heights.

When you'd got over the al fresco bum banditry what did you think of the article? I thought it was interesting, particularly the fact that there were no weather forecasts before Fitzroy decided there should be. I'm sure there were local pundits, though, eg Gilbert White. When was the electric telegraph invented? That must have made a difference.

The article says that Fitzroy actually invented the word "forecast" for
his efforts.

I thought the first weather forecast was recorded in Genesis when God told Noah that a flood of biblical proportions was coming (red alert take immediate action) and according to some it was spot on!

Late 1830s, early 1840s. It grew with the development of railways.
