Default OT Reducing emissions

Not long ago, a power company announced it would close a coal fired
power station in Scotland (which pumps out loads of filth into the
atmosphere and contributes to GW) and retain the use of a gas powered
station (rather less filthy).
Regardless of the power company's motives, this is in line with stated
policy to reduce greenhouse gases etc. yet politicians of very hue threw
their arms up in horror,

Today, a power company announced it would close a coal fired power
station in England and reopen a gas fired station nearby.
A wannabe Labour leader throws her hands up in horror at the terrible news.

It is the policy of all our governments to move away from using fossil
fuels to generate electricity and of those, coal is reckoned to be the
worst. Why are they so horrified when a power company finally does
something the government claims to want them to do?

Perhaps the policy isn't a policy at all, in which case please remove
the green surcharges from our power bill.

You don't say why the politicians were horrified at the closure of the coal-fired power stations. How much more is there to this? The cases are not identical anyway.
