Default West Cornwall - Steaming beaches

Lovely sunshine again this morning, the visitors are having to pinch themselves.

However, every day is different & today saw cliff top mist & steaming beaches rather than simple sea fog banks, particularly before 11:00.

Cliff top mist above a sunny beach at Sennen http://www.sennen-cove.com/index.htm

Meanwhile, at Perranuthnoe, where I ended up this morning, for half an hour the beach steamed enough to give a band of mist 800 yards or so across.

Mobile phone pic & explanation @ http://www.easterling.freeserve.co.uk/steamer.html

Average temperature for May now 0.2C below the 1981-2010 norm, with 88% of normal rainfall - so as average a May as you can get.

Cloud amounts and wind have increased steadily since 14:00, things are on the change. Apart from overnight drizzle 21st/22nd (0.3mm) the last proper rain was on the 18th, 2.2mm.

Maximum temperature today was 17.6C at approx 13:30.

Excellent photo Graham.

Something we get a lot of around here during humid weather and a
southerly breeze is cloud abruptly forming half-way up the cliff face
with the top shrouded like the Table Cloth on Table Mountain.

I take it that this could be a similar effect that the air, saturated
with humidity after passing over hot, wet sand is then forced to travel
up the cliff-side and cools slightly forming a perpetual, stationary but
evolving cloud.

Next time it happens I will have to take a photo though a video would be
far more impressive.

I have stood on the cliff top when this was happening and you get soaked
very quickly but it is a very warm soaking. Reminds me of when I got
soaked from the mist of the Trade Winds straight in off the sea.

I'm sure your right. I've got an old scanned photo (pre digital!) taken on Skybus flying over Sennen. (I took as many freebie flights as I could when I worked for them!) There is cliff top fog, formed as the air is forced to rise, but only above the beach where there was plenty of steamy warm wet sand. No fog on the cliffs either side even though they are slightly higher.

Fascinating subject coastal fog, so many variations on a theme.
