Think it must be everyone's favorite. There is nothing else that comes
close to it.

Unfortunately it still seems to miss a lot of the lightning here, when
there's a live storm around...

Same here Paul.
What happened to the thunderstorms for SW England?
Have n't heard a dicky bird here.
Once again the English Channel is too wide down here for the storms from France to retain their electrical activity as they come north.
It seems you have to be roughly east of IOW for the thunderstorms to survive the shorter sea passage.

Thunderstorms in Dawlish overnight. I was woken by heavy rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning. That's the nature of this kind of activity. Some get the storms, some don't.

And to be fair to the Met Office, the forecasts this morning have been stressing the 'hit and miss' nature of the thunder.

Yes. I've never found Len's comment to be true in Dawlish: 'Once again the English Channel is too wide down here for the storms from France to retain their electrical activity as they come north.'

Not all the best thunderstorms we have had have had their origins over France, but a good percentage have and I've watched them as they crossed the channel towards us.

However, in this instance and to be fair to Len, we look to have had our thunderstorms and they are now concentrated mainly to the east of Portland. This animation from Netweather overlays lightning strikes with the rain.( Hit the 'Lightning on' button)

That's impressive, I've not seen that before I like the advancing
thunder 'front', moving at the speed of sound!

It says 'real time' but there must be some delay, perhaps it's of the
order of 15 mins like the rainfall radar.

Such a tight cluster on this
http://www.isleofwightweather.co.uk/live_storm_data.htm
as main receiver is on the IoW, presumably quite accurate

No accuracy there, about 50 miles out, counting 5 sec to the mile for
local thunder claps, Southampton

There's been an echo in Bedfordshire for a while, well away from any
rain on the radar but someone on UK Weather Discussion (on FB) has just
reported a rumble there. Presumably high-level activity.

I you get it so will I and I go to bed later than you. I go to bed later than almost everybody. Blitzortung is looking quite menacing.

I think I'm probably second last then most nights! I waited till the
street lights were turned off at 1.00 am to watch meteors(one
advantage)but of course it had clouded up by then.
In the event rain didn't quite make it here - did you get it Tudor?
Dave

No rain or thunder before I went to bed (about 4 am) but some short spells of heavy rain this morning. Some rather unconvincing thunder and lightning midday to about 1.30 pm. It was very gloomy around 12.30 pm and I almost needed the light on. Now much brighter with
fast moving thin low stratus and a good ENE'ly,force 5.
