I am trying to move my WMII onto a low powered 'Justo'p which runs
Windows 8.1, soon to be upgraded to Windows 10. Only just got it. The problem I have is my Weather Station is connected via a USB to Serial adaptor cable. This has been working on my old Windows XP PC for some years now. I have found the old CD with the driver but it still won't recognise any ports. Any ideas or help would much appreciated. -- Keith (Southend) "Weather Home & Abroad" http://www.southendweather.net Twitter:@LawnscienceEssx |

I've just checked in Device Manager and the following drivers are loaded: Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM1 & COM5) Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART (COM3) You can get the Silicon Labs latest driver from here (which I think you will need for the Davis AWS to work): http://www.silabs.com/products/mcu/P...CPDrivers.aspx And the Prolific drivers from he http://www.prolific.com.tw/US/ShowPr...id=225&pcid=41 Hope this helps. -- Nick Gardner Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |

The SiLabs one will be for the Davis USB logger, which Keith will not have for a WMII. Only solution that I know offhand is to get a new serial to USB adapter that does definitely have a Win10 compatible driver, preferably an FTDI chipset one - they seem to keep their drivers more up-to-date than any other chip designer. If you get stuck then we do sell an FTDI one - it's not the cheapest but it does definitely seem to be compatible. John Dann www.weatherstations.co.uk |

John Dann www.weatherstations.co.uk Thanks John, I think I have tried some of the drivers mentioned above, abut will give it another go tomorrow. do you have a link to a new serial to usb adaptor which should be compatible with Win 10? Much appreciated all the replies. Keith (Southend) -- Keith (Southend) "Weather Home & Abroad" http://www.southendweather.net Twitter:@LawnscienceEssx |

Dang 'n' darnation, for some reason I read Keith's email that he was going to upgrade to Windows 8.1. The old Prolific chipsets don't have drivers for Win8 either AFAIK (I think that any driver that works under Win8 should also work under Win10 and vice versa). The problem is that just saying Prolific doesn't really define the chipset - I think there are at least two sets of Prolific chipsets (very possibly 2) and while there may well be Win8/10 drivers for more recent ones, these don't necessarily work for the older chipsets eg as were used in the Davis 8434 adapters. That's why I prefer FTDI - they do seem to be able to maintain both chipset and driver compatibility over time. @Keith: Drop us an email or phone on Monday morning and we can talk further. JGD |

JGD I have a USB to serial converter I purchased from Maplin some time ago which I still use for downloading data from my Garmin GPS. I have just plugged it in to the USB port on my Windows 10 desktop and it shows up as a Prolific USb to serial COM3 port, the port number is dependant on the USB port in use. I am almost ceratin that I never explicityly loaded these drivers so I think they are available from within either Windows 8 or 10; the PC came with Windows 8 originally. In any case the Prolific drivers can be found online. I have just checked and it is working fine. Alan |

But Prolific in particular went through a phase where they were very slow to write new drivers especially for their older USB chipsets. To the best of my knowledge, some of the older ones have still never been updated for Win8/10 compatibility - maybe there's some technical issue as to why it can't be done. JGD |

JGD Looking at the Prolific website it does state: NOTE: Windows 8/8.1/10 are NOT supported in PL-2303HXA and PL-2303X EOL chip versions. Run PL2303 CheckChipVersion tool program in Windows XP/Vista/7 to check chip version. Windows XP, 2000, 98 and Windows ME driver technical support is discontinued. Prolific recommends to use PL-2303HXD (HX Rev D) or PL2303TA chip. http://www.prolific.com.tw/US/ShowPr...id=225&pcid=41 Keith (Southend) using google groups on Justop |
