Well according to the netweather rainfall radar, it's been raining
continuously here now, light to moderate, for 75 minutes. But unless you were outside to feel occasionally a few small spots on your face or see one or two spots on the car windcreen, you'd never have known it. All surfaces are still dry and the RH is still down at 68%. You can't always judge a book by its radar! Off for a bike ride in a minute, in the so-called light to moderate rain, in my T shirt... -- Dave Fareham (W) |

It's evaporation below the radar beam. It is very common. Rainfall radar isn't perfect. I know, but 75 minutes of it is uncommon in these parts, which is why I reported it. The rain did eventually burst through though, a heavy shower at 9:30 BST produced 2.6mm. No thunder or lightning here though and the temperature's still up at 19.7 deg C -- Dave Fareham (W) |

The weather radar looks horrendous in Devon at the momemt 0337 BST and we are just getting the odd spot. Flashes of lightning overhead but no thunder. |

Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, Surrey. I can't remember off the top of my head the angles of the radar beams. But if you knew this and also the location of the radars then you could work out when the radar would probably give returns that are unlikely to be genuine precipitation at ground level. I would suggest a rule of thumb where the precipitation detection height is 1500 metres above the ground then echoes on the radar would not necessarily translate to precipitation falling on an observer at ground level. -- Freddie Pontesbury Shropshire 102m AMSL http://www.hosiene.co.uk/weather/ http://twitter.com/PontesburyWx for hourly reports ----Android NewsGroup Reader---- http://usenet.sinaapp.com/ |
