Fred has now made it to hurricane status. It must be one of the furthest east that has formed at only 22.5°W on record, although its not forecast to get past 40°W, but who knows the forecast from the NHC although good on track for Erika was poor otherwise.

The one good thing about the NHC is that they do maintain an archive for every TC so you can do a bit of verification.

Somehow this season I don't think we'll make it to TC Wilma!

The NHC, even in the early stages of the forecast for Erica, when it
was forecasting it to become a hurricane, did say that it would move
into a region of strong vertical shear for a couple of days and might
not survive it. Then the track moved further south and the problem of
crossing land was added to the mix.

I did some coding (as you do) and came up with some stats from the HURDAT dataset (that started in 1851) that show that Hurricane Fred was the second most easterly forming North Atlantic Hurricane in the whole record. You can find all tables and charts he

Dear Mr Chips,
I see someone called TC Fred is in the news. Will he visit us in Penrhyndeudraeth? That'd be a blow.

Yours sincerely, Mrs Trellis, North Wales.
