Lawrence Jenkins writes The Gloomiest August Bank Holiday I can seem to remember? There probably were worse but none I can recall. I can remember at least one from twenty-plus years ago when an ex-hurricane arrived, bringing very heavy rain. -- John Hall "Honest criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, a friend, an acquaintance, or a stranger." Franklin P Jones Hurricane Charley, 1986? Col 1968 was a crap Summer in the SE but I've no memory of what the Bank Holiday was like. I see that year, the Bank Holiday Monday was 2nd September and the situation that day looks a bit better than today for the SE but, with a depression just to the west of Ireland, I doubt it was a great day for the country as a whole. We had some of the worse flooding I can remember in September 1968 here in Southend-on-Sea. -- Keith (Southend) "Weather Home & Abroad" http://www.southendweather.net Twitter:@LawnscienceEssx |

August had high of +6hPa over the Faeroes. UK was still under a NE'ly, anticyclonic in NW but cyclonic in SE. In September, the high had shifted NE to near Bear I. and there was a low of -8hPa due W of Ireland and S of Iceland. A trough from that extended E across Wales and E Anglia. People we know from round here have returned early from camping on Bodmin Moor saying it's been so bad down there this past week:-( Having said that it has been much more pleasant than expected for my daughter's family in Christchurch who seem to have dodged most of the rain and it was surprisingly warm apparently. Dave, S.Essex I think it takes a certain type of person to go camping on Bodmin Moor! Not too bad right on the coast last week, as you can see http://www.sennen-cove.com/imaug15.htm Though temperatures were generally disappointing. There's no picture of yesterdays depressing weather. Nor Saturday, which was bright & still with sunny intervals. Graham Penzance |
